As a writer with a family and many awesome responsibilities, I find most opportunities to create get stuffed up my shirtsleeve. I busy my hands with other tasks and writing appears again only when I do the wash. (Which I don't do actually. I hate laundry. My husband does it.) On with the metaphor. Or not. I like metaphors as much as I like laundry.
In an effort to give writing the weight it deserves, I've created goals. If you're a writer, but not a full-time writer, you'll understand me when I say goals get cred. Goals = Responsibilities = Not Playin'. An illustration: "I'm not staring listlessly out the window. I'm listening to my main character. Doing the dishes right now would be irresponsible."

You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what's burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke. ~Arthur Polotnik
